Our Service in the Community

In January our committee continued our second year taking the “travelling tea basket” to our friends at the Summerland Seniors Village. Mission & Outreach and the Community and Social Committee have been working together to arrange these monthly visits. The numbers of residents who come on Sunday keep growing and we feel that we are providing a wonderful hour of fellowship.

All year the M&O Committee worked at the school kits project. Many members of our congregation and many from the Summerland community are collecting materials and sewing cloth bags. 2014 saw 426 completed school kits carried to the Mennonite Central Committee in Abbotsford. MCC send the school kits to developing countries around the world. In July our annual “kick off” BBQ was held to highlight the start of our annual campaign.

In the Fall, we concentrated mainly on the organization of the second Festival of Lights open house event at the church. More popular than last year we saw 170 dinners served in the Friendship Hall. Many were making CD’s and crafts in the sanctuary and the quiet room was very popular and much appreciated by families.

The Mitten Mission & Service fundraiser starts on the first Sunday of Advent every year. Decorative mittens are distributed to the congregation.  Participants are encouraged to fill the mittens with change, return to the church, and mittens are then counted and the emptied mittens decorate the Christmas tree. Donations are part of Summerland United Church commitment to the Mission & Service fund of the United Church of Canada.

Our committee are looking forward to 2015 and will continue working to sustain the projects that we are currently undertaking.

Our thanks to all who continue to help with and supported our projects over this past year. We look forward to working together in 2015
